If you’re applying to NYU during the 2026–2027 admissions cycle, the supplemental essay gives you an opportunity to show how you engage with different perspectives, work across differences, and contribute to collaborative communities.
By sharing a specific and meaningful experience, you can help the admissions committee understand the kind of classmate and community member you would be at NYU.
NYU has not yet officially confirmed its 2026–2027 supplemental question. The prompt below is from the 2025–2026 application and is included for planning purposes. We will update this page when the new application is released.
The following question is from NYU’s 2025–2026 application. We will update it when the 2026–2027 prompt is confirmed.
We are looking for students who want to be bridge builders—students who can connect people, groups, and ideas to span divides, foster understanding, and promote collaboration. Tell us how your experiences have helped you understand what qualities and efforts are needed to bridge divides so that people can better learn and work together.
Applicants were invited to consider one or more of the following:
Word limit: 250 words
Although the NYU response is labeled optional, it provides another opportunity to add meaningful information to a highly selective application.
Consider responding if you can add something important that is not already addressed elsewhere in your application.
A concrete interaction or collaboration will generally be more compelling than broad statements about respecting differences.
Explain what you did, how you communicated, and what you learned rather than describing only the disagreement or group.
NYU wants to understand the qualities and efforts required to bridge differences. Make the lesson clear.
Avoid repeating your Common App personal statement. Use the response to introduce another dimension of your experiences or character.
With only 250 words, every sentence should contribute to the central idea.
